I am a UCLan graduate. Due to their being no cultural sector to speak of in employment terms in this town, I am having to leave Preston to pursue a career. My experience is typical in that I am one of thousands of UCLan graduates who would be happy to remain here and contribute to a growing, vibrant city but for whom there are no realistic employment opportunities to enable this.

Isn’t it ironic that at a time when the Council wants to promote and develop Preston as the North West’s Third City, it seems not to have occurred to them that they have a resource in terms of skills and employability on their their doorstep in the form of UCLan which is being utterly ignored?

What would the candidates do to reverse this situation in real terms and how and when would they do it (and beyond simply talking about a ‘vision’ for graduate retention which I’ve often heard spouted at public sector meetings and buffets yet which has come to absolutely nothing in the real world up to this point)?

I would like to know if the fuel tax is going to stay at the present HIGH rate or will it be coming down, if it came down it would help the small buisnesses, which in turn would help in the economic recovery.

Is there a reason why you’re not intending to speak to the other candidates in Preston North & Wyre?

Good comment Luke. Originally it was going to be just candidates for the Preston central. I contacted UKIP in Lancaster & the candidate for Preston North & Wyre got in touch.
If you have any questions post them here or contactus@blogpreston.co.uk

You say there is no culture sector in Preston; there is a building right in the center of town called the (Harris Library) full of culture, art, etc

Having a degree does not guarantee you a job, you seem to be of the view point that the local council or better still the national government of the day should make opportunities so that your potential can be fulfilled.

I am curious what town are you leaving for?

You make a statement about its typical of graduates of UCLan, how is it the University fault?

If you feel the study you have completed has left you short of what’s required for your field maybe an assessment of what you can do and not what you cannot do is a better angle.

I don’t agree that everyone should go to Uni nor does UKIP as a political force, standards have slipped and there are many degrees studied that turn out to be worthless and not worth the paper they are written on.

At the end of the day, it is down to the individual to inspire and create and no government is going to do that, but I do believe when inspiration is crossed with vision and combined with graft mountains will be moved.

Your comment about the council is interesting, ironically there is a full department that concentrates on promoting the city however it seems to have missed you, are you saying the marketing and advertising has missed the most important group of people?

UKIP wont be able to “Undo the damage” if the LibLabCon take control as they have all signed up for giving further powers to Brussels, currently 72% of our laws are now made in the EU without our consent.

As a nation, we need to start to put pride back into our country and build new and creative ideas and I hope MC1 you have the metal and stamina to stay the course to build, design, and create what needs to be done. (Enough Said)

Phyllis your comment is on the ball, it is a shame the government wont listen. Only today in the Lancashire Evening Post there is a haulage company closing its doors, as it cannot compete with foreign trucks.

At the moment the government is taking 67p a liter in tax, they know we have to use our cars so it is a win win situation for them and with excellent public transport at their feet they really don’t give a stuff about the working man in the street.

UKIP would tax foreign trucks just as we have to pay to use their roads.

Duty on fuel must be cut immediately otherwise nobody is going to be able to afford anything including food.

97% of companies in this country come under the term “small business” so why is the government determined to support a few large companies and banks whilst the rest of us struggle. (Enough Said)

@LukeBosman Thanks for your comment Luke, it’s also partly due to resources. Blog Preston is run by volunteers and there’s only so many hours in the day. Thought we’d start with the Preston constituency and if post proves popular then we’ll look to do the others if we get chance.

I didn’t say there is no culture sector in Preston. I know there is as I participate in it and contribute to it and extends well beyond the confines of the single building you cite as an example. I said that in terms of graduate employment there is no cultural sector. My experience is not unique. As you well know, nowhere did I claim or even infer that having a degree entitles me to a job. I don’t believe this to be true. I’m not sure why you assume this is my position. Neither am I sure why you ask me why I think anything I’ve mentioned is the fault of the univerity. Where did I say that? The standard of tuition I received at UCLan was phenomenal. Maybe you have first hand knowledge of degree courses that “are not worth the paper they’re written on”. Thankfully, I indentified the suitability of my course and choice of institution to my desired outcomes to a high level of accuracy so this wasn’t my personal experience. I don’t believe it is the job of the university to lead on the cultural sector in Preston – that’s the job of its elected leaders and the systems and initiatives they configure. I’m saying that if Preston does not retain as many of the the graduate skills and committment it produces on its doorstep – and it doesn’t – then it’s wasting a primary opportunity for sustainable growth. Nowhere have I claimed it’s the job of the Council or the government of the day to create opportunities for me to fulfil my potential. I said the opportunity UCLan presents in Preston to contribute to sustainable growth via graduate retention is not being realised. Yes – I certainly am saying that the Council does not do a good enough job of promoting the city. You might remember that the LEP reported a poll late last year that indicated how those being polled rated Preston as having virtually zero to offer in terms of cultural activity. We both know that this is not the case but have to accept that if this opinion exists then it exists for a reason. I spoke about this with a key, senior figure in Preston’s cultural sector not long after the story appeared and they agreed that the promotion of the city in cultural terms is severely lacking and has not worked sufficiently well. Yes – I have the “metal and stamina” to pursue my career as was indicated by my comment that I am relocating in order to do so. Thanks for your concern.
