This book is a real gem! I found the premise of social history and the history of the Whittingham railway simultaneously fascinating and hugely entertaining. The author combines histrorial facts of this bygone era with personal anecdotes and throughout his humour shines through. There is clear evidence of painstaking research and this will please both train enthusiasts - especially the extenisve photos of a wide range of trains - and the local historian alike. Of course, this book will particularly appeal to Prestonians such as myself. However, I feel that the book's appeal is wider than this as anyone who has an interest in the Victorian period and later will discover some fascinating historical nuggets. A unique railway and a unique record - this book should be on every Prestonians book shelf and it deserves to be a success.

As with all David's books, this one is a true gem of Preston history. He is an author who is able to convey Preston's history in such a unique and fascinating manner. Well done David on another wonderfully interesting and pleasantly written book.
