Some time ago, Steve Halliwell, a local historian and avid birder, had a vision of discovering all of Preston’s old Inns, Taverns and Beer houses. Today he is rapidly approaching the realisation of his aspiration by an ongoing project of documenting a vast number of those institutions, which have now mostly vanished, on his website.

To celebrate the success of this project, Steve is presenting a series of talks at the Avenham Park Pavillion on alternate Wednesday evenings. The next presentation, at 7.30pm 7th August 2013, has the intriguing title of “Licensed to Stroll the Market Place”. Steve will talk of the surprising number of public houses which existed in the area of Preston’s Harris Museum alone, and of those around the Market Place which will include a good yarn or two of their very interesting history and great people of the past who visited them.
