The raid happened at 1.25pm on Monday at the Nationwide on Fishergate.

The man is described as being white, approximately 5ft 2inches, stocky and with short dark and grey hair.

Lancashire Police said he made threats to a female cashier.

She was forced to hand over a large quantity of cash as the man indicated he had a firearm in a white plastic bag.

Det Insp Warren Atkinson said: “This has left the cashier and several other members of staff extremely shaken. We have trained staff supporting them.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed this or saw anything suspicious to come forward.”

The man was said to leave and head down Fishergate towards the railway station.

Nationwide are about to move further up the street to a new store in what was River Island on the corner by the St George’s Shopping Centre.

Anyone with information should call the police on 101.
