Strolling with Spiderman

I am training for the Moonlight Walk. It’s an organised half marathon walk to raise money for St Catherine’s Hospice. I will be walking with a close friend in memory of her lovely mum, whose life was cut short by cancer last Christmas. Training started yesterday with a not too gruelling thirty laps of the pool. With a strict regime to stick to, ahem, I enticed my four year old out into the brilliant sunshine to take a mystery tour of Preston. The deal was I’d write the words and he would take the pictures. Here’s where we headed…

The future of Blog Preston

You might have noticed the site going through a few changes recently, a flurry of live blogging activity for the elections and a new Facebook fan page.

The reason is that we’re developing Blog Preston. It started out as a humble wordpress.com one-man-band operation back in January 2009 and since then has evolved into a community news and views site for Preston, Lancashire.

Election 2010 – The key figures

With Preston and its surrounding constituencies going to poll tomorrow, here is the key information you’ll need regarding the percentage of voters needed to swing their vote in order to unseat the current candidate; and the time the result is expected to be announced.

Whilst Preston, Wyre & Preston North, and the Fylde require a reasonably large percentage of voters to change their minds based on the last election; the South Ribble and Ribble Valley constituencies should be very closely contested – and could go right down to the wire.

Can You Spot The Squirrel?

I know several of you read my last three articles and are now becoming nature detectives. One of the best things about getting out there and enjoying nature is that it has no social barriers. Whether saint or a sinner, man or woman, old or new, British Wildlife treats us all the same and hopefully we treat wildlife with equal impartiality, but can this be possible?

Preston’s best view? Beautiful Broadgate

View from BroadgateThe days are drawing longer, the air is growing warmer and the flowers are blossoming brighter. Ah yes, ladies and gentlemen, it appears spring is creeping back upon us.

Spring does a lot of brilliant things; it sends the first tantalising smells of early-evening barbecues  into the air, it prompts the birds to chirp with a little more cheer, and, of course, it strives to show some wonderful and beautiful parts of  Preston in all their splendid glory. read article »

Features & Opinion

Examining Preston’s Fossilised Past

It’s difficult even with help of study and older relatives to imagine the days when Britain was a leader in domestic manufacturing. Factories, mines, and shipping have largely been superseded by gleaming office blocks, shopping centres and colourful high streets. Massive outsourcing of labour, coinciding with a rapid period of decolonisation introduced commerce to the fact that both labour and resources were plentiful abroad; and both could be gathered cheaper than in Britain where, as a developed nation, wages and prices of goods are higher. read article »

Rhodri, a suitable cause for concern, Chapter Three, Part 1

CHAPTER Three, Part 1. To catch up with previous instalments, click here.

At 3-15pm Parker and Craven went to Layton Cemetery where a forensic scientist was conducting a preliminary post mortem on John Doe.

The cemetery was an old one, originally built in round stones collected from the beach, it’s walls had begun to bow and looked rather as if it were not for the masses of ivy clinging to its sides, the whole building would collapse into a pile of rubble. The front doors were made of solid oak and the two detectives swung them open and walked inside. The walls were hung with huge tapestries depicting the resurrection of Christ, Mary the holy Mother and the beginning of creation. The cold solid floor was tiled in red and white with a green leaf pattern dotted here and there. Another large double door lay ahead with a smaller, more modern one to its left. A conspicuous sign above the door read STRICTLY PRIVATE, visitors by appointment only, ring for attention. read article »

Rhodri, A Suitable Cause for Concern, Chapter Two, Part 2

7:55am. Rhodri wasn’t due back into the station until the following day but often he preferred to spend the time in the comforting and familiar surroundings of his office. His only friends were his work colleagues and although he thought the world of his land lady Mrs Gladstone, she had a terrible habit of capturing him and reciting all the ailments that have troubled her during the last few days. read article »

Restaurant Review: King Karai

There are few things worse than a bad curry.

Well, perhaps a slight exaggeration. But we all identify with the symptoms of a poorly made curry. That sickening and bloated feeling. The cloying, bottom of a birdcage-like taste in your mouth the day after. And of course, the involuntarily explosive bowel movements. read article »
