Over the past few years exceptional chefs, the best in the business, have cooked up a storm. This year a Preston chef joins the line-up for 2014.

On Sunday 26th January Michael Wignall will be delighting diners with his superb food knowledge and deft touch. Michael is currently based at the 2 Michelin star The Latymer at Penny Hill Park Hotel in Surrey.

The Preston man, who attended St Cuthbert Mayne School, trained for 3 years at Preston College of Food and Arts. At the time he was an outstanding BMX rider and could have taken this up as a career. However, his obsession for fine food ruled and his outstanding career began.

After a brief spell working in Spain he came under the wings of legendary Northern chef and honuary Prestonian Paul Heathcote. He cooked for Paul at Broughton Park in Preston and then at Heathcote’s restaurant in Longridge before assisting in various starred restaurants around the country working alongside celeb chefs such as Marco Pierre White and John Burton Race.

He took charge of the Cliveden Hotel in Berkshire and achieved 4 AA Rosettes, retaining the Michelin Star at their Waldo’s Restaurant, before moving to Cumbrian restaurant Michaels Nook in Grasmere again retaining their Four AA Rosettes and Michelin Star.

He later worked as Head Chef within The Burlington Restaurant at The Devonshire Arms Hotel in Yorkshire and later became owner of the Latymer the only establishment to be acknowledged by The AA with Four Rosettes in the January 2009 announcements. He later gained his first Michelin Star in 2011 achieving a second star in 2013.

Michael is a great believer in training the new generation and helps develop chefs regardless of previous experience as long as they have the right ‘can do’ attitude.

He applies dazzling, bang up-to-date cooking techniques to the highest quality ingredients to create beautiful plates of flavour-packed food. Called ‘Best Chef you have never heard of’ by Olive magazine  Michael was seen on BBC’s Masterchef, The Professionals as a judge and he was recently competing on ITV in ‘Britain’s Best Dish – The Chefs’.
