A Preston allotment has applied for funding to help create a memorial garden.
AdvertisementPenwortham Holme West Allotment Association wants £1,350 from Lancashire County Councillors to create an event space at the site on Liverpool Road.
A statement in their application says: “In recent years we have been engaged in an extensive programme of regeneration within our 10.50 acre allotment site.
“We wish now to create a Memorial Garden and events area for a suitable designated piece of land.
“At present our events such a allotment shows, apple pressing days, plant swap days, have to take place on the car park. This is to the detriment of car users and has potential to cause safety issues.
“The events area will be situated within the Memorial Garden which will be a pleasant area in which past plot holders can be remembered and honoured.”
The allotment which has a 12 months waiting list has 174 plots.
Around 350 people use the allotment every year, including family and friends of allotment holders.
£250 each has already been secured from Penwortham South county councillor Sue Prynn who chose to authorise a reduced grant to the group.
County councillor David Howarth representing Penwortham North approved his share.
